Live out of the country for at least two weeks.

Don't travel much, just stay in one general area (except for a few day trips).

Two weeks is the maximum I've ever been in a country. Three weeks in the longest I've ever been away from home on a vacation (that was when I was 15).

I've stayed in Montezuma for two weeks, never even really did any day trips (other than errands to the next town over).

October 5, 2008

Go to the Detroit Zoo.

I haven't been in years and I don't live that far from it. (If they close it before I get there, go to the Toledo Zoo, I've never been there.)

I "got a hippopotamus for Christmas" along with adoption/sponsorship for a year, Kelly also included a visit to the zoo as part of the present which I finally got to do! We went with Sarah and AJ and had a blast.

Get something for my car to integrate my iPod better.

Something that powers it and lets me view the songs and control it from something other than the iPod display.

I finally got an Alpine cda-9886 (I got this in April or May but forgot to mention it). It's got an iPod adaptor and USB input. It's great! My one complaint is sometimes with audiobooks it forgets where in the book it is, and when it forgets it kinda screws up until you remove the iPod and put it back on. But the USB port makes any thumb drive or USB device work the same as an iPod, from the menu it's hard to tell the difference.

Go one week without using any cash.

Must use charge, debit or EFT. Keep track of the very few times you have to use cash.

I've done this, it wasn't as easy as I thought. Something kept coming up: the charge machine wasn't working or something like that and I don't have a debit card which would take care of some of the smaller stores which only take debit. But the hardest thing was lottery tickets, vending machines and giving money to the homeless (I had decided that I wasn't going to have these count but eventually I had a week go by without having any of the ca$h issues comes up). Since then, I've had a few more cashless weeks but usually I only need a few dollars for little things.

Bicycle 101 miles.

Do this in one year. This will actually be harder since it's work to take my bicycle places.

I've been using it a lot more around the neighborhood so it's been easier to get in the miles. I had originally thought this would require me taking the bike places to do this.

This one wasn't hard at all, I go so much farther with my bike. I've probably been driving it at least 10 miles a week most weeks so I'm probably more in the 200 mile range just from this year.

Take Mom to England.

Mom needs to see another continent. I did talk her into getting her passport a year ago. And they speak English (sort of) in England, so I think that's the place.

We went a few months ago, I never mentioned it here. She had a great time and she just mentioned a few days ago that she still thinks of it a lot.

Adopt a Baby?

Make some progress in adopting one or make one (or decide not to).

It makes me sad to say it, but this one just isn't going to happen in the near future. I haven't decided against it, so much as not made the time and effort towards it (in respect to this 101 day limit). I'll certainly revisit this one eventually in my life but for now, it's "no".

Move somewhere else local?

I keep looking at places a little northwest of where I live (or at least decide I'm not going to). This is an easy one I could have filled out a while back. I'm not planning on moving anywhere local (and haven't been thinking about it for a while now).

August 2, 2008

Change all exterior bulbs in my car.

Do them all at once so I don't need to change any of them for a long time.

I finished all the bulbs in my car. I purchased them all the last time a rear light went out but only changed all the ones in back (it was wet or cold or something). I replaced all the ones in front so they're all done. Hopefully, I won't have to change them all again before I get a different car.

May 24, 2008

Get Mom hooked up with a TiVo or something similar.

This I can probably do. I'll see what she keeps with her cable plan and maybe just get her hooked up with their DVR.

I finally got Mom to try out the DVR from the WOW cable company. I've mentioned it a few times but...

The other week they were coming out to work on something else and I got her to call them back and get her a DVR (I think she's actually got it in her new plan). So far it seems to be working for her. It's automagically getting her soap opera and that's what matters. And I know she's used it to record a few other shows!

Do my taxes in 2008.

Mail by April 15, 2008.

They're done and in the mail!!! I'm actually getting more back than I thought. I ended up making a little more last year (I ended up workng more hours at the end of the year) and I did a few different things with my payroll deductions. So I just wasn't sure where I'd be. (I'll have some opposite but similar issues later this year, so it'll be hard to judge for 2008 tax returns too)

Do the Hines Drive lights drive again.

Do their Christmas lights tour.

The last day of the season that they do this is January 1st. We had a nice snowstorm on New Year's Eve so I went on the last day (I didn't want to go if there wasn't snow). If you're in the Detroit area and hav enever done this before, it's worth doing!

December 17, 2007

Go to the Greenfield Village Christmas celebration.

They have lights and fireworks, I live a few miles away and I've never been.

GvholidaynightsSo I did get to go to the Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village. It was all snowy so I went this weekend! I don't like to do these Christmassy, wintery things when there isn't snow out.

It was cold but it was fun. I was hoping for more lights decorating things but since it was old fashioned and such a thing didn't exist in those times I was disappointed on that part. But the "Sleigh Ride" (it actually had wheels) and al the kerosene lanterns and all the little fires and carolers and everyone dressed up old fashioned was fun! And the fireworks at the end made it all worth it! (It was really cold)

December 11, 2007

Switch to a charge card with better rewards.

My current car rewards expire after 3 years and I don't update cars that often so it's kind of a waste.

I switched to a Chase card with better rewards six months ago, I'm not sure if the percentage is better, but since I'll actually redeem the points, it'll be way better for me. Plus, I just upgraded it to a better program.

December 9, 2007

Finish converting my Xbox into a media system.

I picked it up ages ago and never finished (barely started). While this isn't completed, I have already purchased an AppleTV so I've fulfilled that need (months ago actually).. I guess from a geeky factor I didn't solve the problem but I do have a media system in the living room and since it syncs with iTunes it even fits my needs better than the Xbox system would, so I'm crossing this item off my list.

Take a warm vacation in winter 2007-08.

Somewhere sunny and warm (even a short trip counts).I did Costa Rica again! My 4th trip there so far. One of these times I'm not coming back! I spent the week-long trip on the Pacific Ocean side mostly in Jaco and Montezuma.

October 2, 2007

Figure out a better backup system for my computer info

such as: music, photos, data, etc. Something off site(?) or a server at a friend's(?)....

I've got a dual-system here. First of all I use .Mac, it's a great easy seamless way to back up your files. But they never had enough disk space. But they just jumped up to 10GB for the same price. So I back up my music and photos there until a I get full DVD and then make multiple backups (copies here and a copy off site) and then free the space up. I also push those folders up to a non-published folder on a web server that I have extra space at (they've increased their space too).

Make sure I see Mom once a month (and get a meal with her).

Do this for one year (I'm not sure if this will make me feel better or crazier?).I've really seen Mom more this past year and even had times when I've been near her house and met her for a meal or just to say "hi". Actually this past year I bet we've averaged a twice a month (I didn't actually keep a checklist on this item).

July 14, 2007

See a movie every day for a week.

At a theater. So started this and it became impractical, it was something I thought would be fun but just got to be a pain. For all practical purposes this item is done (I got my movie fix filled, five was enough for a week).
  • Transformers
  • Live Free and Die Harder: Die Hard 4
  • Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer
  • Waitress
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

    Take another community education class.

One that lasts more than one night.

I took a two week mortgage class. If you've never gotten a mortgage before, I'd recommend a class like this.

    March 2, 2007

    Get Mom using the Internet.

I'm not sure how to make it happen, but I've got almost 3 years to do this...

HpnotebookI had pretty much given up on the idea but about a week ago she decided she wanted to and I jumped on it; she came over we got a new laptop for her: HP 15.4 inch Dual Core, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive, Dual-Layer DVD burner w/LightScribe, SD chip reader (maybe reads more than that, with the media center “stuff” and a remote for that (which slides nicely into the laptop). A bit more machine than she needs right now but she won't need anything else more than that for a while and it's small enough she can bring it over when she has questions/problems instead of me having to always go over there. The cable people showed up today and she's now on-line at home! AND she signed up for a 4 week (2 hours a week) class that starts next week.

Specifically it's an HP Pavilion 15.4" Widescreen Notebook PC (DV6226US) from Circuit City ($699 AR this week).

    February 7, 2007

    Do my taxes in 2007.

    Mail by April 15, 2007.

Done! Got them mailed today. It's the earliest I've done them in years. I owe the Feds a little, but I get a four times that back from the state so I don't feel too bad, I just hate sending either money...

    January 24, 2007

    Clear out my Amazon Wishlist.

    Buy everything or delete it!

I emptied my Amazon wishlist! I ordered about 9 items, some from Amazon and some from Buy.com (if they were cheaper) and I even ordered one of them used. Then I deleted the other 50+ items and I'll start it over again as I see things I need want.

    December 30, 2006

Take a warm vacation in winter 2006-07.

To somewhere sunny and warm (even a short trip counts).

I went to Costa Rica in winter of 06-07 (http://garylapointe.com/costarica/blog)

    Visit Costa Rica again.

Explore the western peninsula and spend some time in Jaco again.

I'm here right now! So I'm checking this one off. See my "adventures" at http://garylapointe.com/costarica/blog/

    December 25, 2006

Host family Christmas at my house one year.

Have it closer to Christmas, it's been celebrated too early lately.

This was a success! We did it on Saturday the 23rd and I had 27 people over at my condo. A few people more and it would have been too many people in one spot. I'm very happy that I had it and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Go two weeks without Coca Cola.

    No other caffeinated beverages, either.

So I finished this up a few days ago but it's hard to tell the impact that it had. I wasn't feeling well during part of the experiment, so in the end I don't know if the lack of coke really helped me or not. I'll have to experiment more in the future....

Get a better kind of projector for the living room.

To watch television with. The one I have is good, but the technology for that stuff just keeps getting better and I really need want a brighter one (with more features).

So I got a new one of these back in November. I forgot to cross it off the list. I wasn't planning on replacing it at that time but the bulb blew and a new projector that was brighter was only a little bit more.

So, for spending $500 for the projector instead of $300 for the bulb, I got a new smaller, lighter (under 5 pounds) in-warranty projector, a brighter bulb (1800 lumens vs. 1100 lumens which is 61% brighter), it's smaller and has a digital zoom. It's got inputs for composite video (regular video), s-video (like from your DVD player) and SVGA (which doubles as a component video port which supports 480p). It doesn't have any audio inputs but I run it through the stereo so that's okay. It came with a remote and a great carrying bag too.

It's not exactly as high up as I planned to upgrade to, but it's better and the prices will just keep dropping on the better ones...

    December 20, 2006

    Frame more vacation photos.

    Then hang them up.

Photos101So I put some more photos up. And some other hieroglyphic-things I bought in Egypt. And I moved some other travel stuff around. Although I ended up taking the Mt. Washington stuff down, so I need to put those back up somewhere. Some of this is done because I have 28 people coming over Saturday for Christmas and the stuff was piled and sorted on the stairs and I needed to get it out of the way (and my Mom to helped me!).

    Get an eye examination.

It's been a long while and the close stuff is fuzzy sometimes...

I got it done! Everything seems fine except I'm having some near vision problems (which I knew) but I'm still 20/20 at the farther stuff. The Doctor told me to just get some reading glasses for when I need it. Generally it's just a little fuzzy in the morning sometimes and some evenings. I wish I had made the appointment in the morning instead of the middle of the day since it's usually fine then, I just wasn't thinking.

    October 23, 2006

    Take a yoga class

Just take a short community class to try it.

I've been in it four about 4 weeks now. They keep bumping classes later (I think my 10 week class is going to take about 16 weeks). It's great so far. I'll definitely do it again sometime. I guess it's not "done' yet, but since I plan to complete it and I do enjoy it, it fits the reason I put it on the list (to try it).

    October 22, 2006

Take my telescope out of the city.

Use it at least three different nights.

I did this when I was up north last month, I too my little one. It was kind of disappointing for 2 reasons.

  • I think I need a much better telescope to see anything star wise.
  • It was a night with no moon so while it wasn't distracting, it wasn't there to look at either. I'll try the other one some time, but it was a crazy one and I never had a chance to get the larger one together.

  • September 18, 2006

Drink a half gallon of water a day.

Do this for three weeks and see if you feel better(?) or how you feel..

    After 3 weeks I've got some results/conclusions:

  • When I drink that much water, I drink less soda (which is probably good).
  • It makes me need to go to the bathroom more.
  • I think generally got to sleep earlier (maybe to to lack of caffeine or at least it being washed out of my system).
  • I think I slept better (although I attribute this to the lack of other caffeinated drinks more).
  • My neck/shoulders probably bothered me just as much as normal (I think OMT and Chiropractors recommend lots of water).
  • I have very mild psoriasis (dry flaky skin) which comes and goes and thought the extra water might help, but if anything during that period it's gotten a little dryer.
  • My stomach seemed more sensitive to spicy and junk foods than normal.
  • I think slightly overall, I did feel a little better.

Once again it was only 3 weeks and I didn't expect any miracle in terms of changes. And this wasn't a double-blind experiment or anything, it was just me drinking lots more water. I didn't intentionally cut out other drinks but as a result I probably drank less (but I know of some days I drank as much I just had to force the water down later). Some of the above could be attributed to being tired or stressed from work (it was the start of the school year). So no big results other than the sleeping I'll be keeping an eye on that.

I will continue to drink more out of habit (I already am today), but I won't be forcing myself to catch up in the evening.

  • August 8, 2006

Get some kind of window drapes/treatments for the living room.

I need something a little nicer since I pretty much just have blinds.

So I finally got some! And they're actually up and they look pretty nice too. (More money spent at Ikea)

Get new living room tables and end tables.

    I so need these.

57422 Pe163006 S3And I finally got them! I replaced the bigger table and just one of the end tables (and I'm not sure if I will). I really like them. I got them at Ikea so they were reasonably priced and they match my house. (Although the end table is a little shorter than I want). Here's a link to the catalog page.

    July 1, 2006

See Audra Kubat in concert again.

She opened for Aimee Mann in 2006 and she was great. She's local and I want to see here again.

I saw here at TasteFest and she was great. It was an outside concert and it was a lot of fun seeing her again! I picked another CD up while I was there too! Here's some info on her: Times Beach Records (including a few 3s) and here's a few more MP3s and a video and another mp3 and a few more samples. Here's some reviews from MetroTimes 1 2 3 (plus a few more MP3s) 3, VenusZine, Adequacy 1 + 2.

    May 31, 2006

Get some kind of faster Internet connection for while I'm on the go.

EVDO? What happens when I'm somewhere without this? Can I use older tech to get on-line? (My current slow tethered solution works in many places). We'll see what the future brings...

I've got EVDO on my new palm Treo 700p cell phone and it's fast! I've got it connected to my laptop via BlueTooth and it's really fast for being mobile. We'll see how the coverage goes.

Be an early adopter for the next new Palm OS phone.

It needs WiFi, BT, a camera, high speed Internet and a whole lot of memory. (Or some similar solution)

I got it! The new Palm Treo 700p, new this week! It doesn't have the WiFi, but that's 'cause they don't make it that way. But the internet is very fast. So far my main two complaints are no graffiti and it's too big.

    May 25, 2006

    Complete a 26 Things project.

Photos of 26 things in one month. http://www.sh1ft.org/26things/

I did it! I used photos from my trip to Egypt to complete my list of photos 26 things for May 2006. The rest of my egypt stuff is here.

    May 10, 2006

Watch all the Egypt specials I've taped.

I've taped (TiVoed) at least a dozen specials/documentaries about Egypt. Watch at least six before leaving arriving.

I'm done with this one, I'm not sure when I finished, but it's crossed off now. I didn't count specifically and I can't remember when I watched which ones when but I've seen a lot. I'm sure the few I watched on the flight will balance the scales if I didn't get six in before I actually "left".

    April 18, 2006

    Vacation in Egypt.

Be sure to see the pyramids!

Mecairomuseum-1I did it! I'm in Egypt right now (April 2006) as I write this and I'm talking about it at MyTripToEgypt.com

    April 15, 2006

    Do my current taxes.

    Mail by April 15, 2006.

    Done and mailed!!!

    April 7, 2006

    Get an SLR digital camera.

Something SLRish with a better zoom and lens(es).

So I got the Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera 18-55mm Lens. I liked the silver one better but Dell was out of stock and they had such a good deal (I think I got it for $739 shipped/tax and I have to mail in for $100 rebate). It's great and it's fast but it's got way too many buttons! I might actually have to read the manual...

I thought it would mount on my Macintosh desktop like a thumb-drive but it doesn't. Fortunately iPhoto recognizes it just fine. I was just surprised that it didn't mount. So now I need a few other things for it: plain or UV filter, some kind of case, a USB device to mount it as a drive and maybe a spare battery.

    April 6, 2006

Get a new battery for my digital camera.

I've needed this for a while.

So I finally got the new battery for my Minolta Dimage XT. I had to get the energizer version from Buy.com since I couldn't find the actual factory battery anywhere. The old one just died of too much use. I charged it up today and it seems to work fine so far, I'll take a few more this weekend to make sure it's a-okay.

    March 16, 2006

Order the brown dress shoes that I like.

I own several pairs in black but need to order the ones in the color brown. I hate shopping for shoes and I'm definitely lacking nice brown shoes. So the guy at the Hush Puppies store said he could order them for me cheaper than I could buy on-line (and they were cheaper). I just wasn't sure what my size was (I always get confused if I like the 10 or 10.5 better) so I wanted to check my black ones at home.

SuttonbrownI'm definitely lacking nice brown shoes and I own several pairs of these shoes in black but need to order the ones in the color brown. I'll know I like them (this has been my standard black shoe for years) and I've been meaning to do this for ages so I added it to my 101 in 1001 list. So the guy at the Hush Puppies store said he could order them for me cheaper than I could buy on-line (which was true). I just wasn't sure exactly what my size was so I wanted to check my black ones at home.

So I found the size and called them back and when they got on-line to order them it turns out they didn't have the brown ones any more. So I checked all the on-line stores and the few places that did have them didn't have my size (and they were all more expensive than he could have got them for me)...

Then I found Boscov's they have the Sutton Hush Puppies in Brown and they were half off. So I ordered two pair! And I loved them.

Did I tell you I hate shoe shopping? And that they don't make these any more? And they were brown? And they were exactly what I wanted? Guess what? I ordered 4 more!

    March 15, 2006

Frame all of my college degrees.

It's been 10 years, isn't it about time?

FrameddegreesDone. So I'm hanging the degrees, I've got a really nice dual degree frame for my Bachelor's and Master's degrees (Kelly got me that for Christmas). And four smaller frames for the associates degrees (2 year degrees). But as I was opening the 4 frames it turns out one was broken and they discontinued these about a week after I traveled to multiple targets to get them. I had to hit two Targets to get a replacement.

I don't actually have enough room for all six where I wanted them (but I put them there anyways). Plus the color really doesn't match as well as I hoped (I like the color it just doesn't match where it is). Yes, that's the new armoire/desk that I completed as a task a few days ago (click for a larger view).

I also noticed the Associate's degrees just say which department where they're from but not what degree.

This is done, but the four of them might get reframed later...

And if anyone can tell me the correct way to fix the apostrophes above, I'll gladly do that...

    March 11, 2006

Get a new desk for the landing.

I've got a spot upstairs that needs a nice desk. I've kinda wanted one since I moved in...

ArmoirclosedArmoireopenIt's here, it's great! I ordered the armoire, it's like a cabinet that hides the desk until you open the doors! It took a while to assemble it but it was worth it! It looks really good up where I've got it.

Do my taxes for last year.

And actually mail them. (These are the 2004 taxes).

Mailed!!!! I hate doing them, I'm always afraid I should be claiming something else...

    March 8, 2006

    Post this list on-line.

Get this (101 in 1001) list formatted so that I can get it imported into Movable Type and on-line.

Up and on-line!!!! It took a while and then I kept finding duplicates and such...
It still needs some formatting, I don't like the default template.

    March 6, 2006

Figure out a plan for my mortgage.

I pay a extra on my mortgage, but bank interest payment rates are about to exceed my 4.25% mortgage interest rates I need to figure out a better plan to pay this off.

My mortgage is actually a five year ARM (this means after 5 years it becomes an Adjustable Rate Mortgage). So in November of 2008 my rate will start fluctuating (probably up). So instead of paying the extra, I'm putting it in a "Christmas Account" in the bank, when I get $1000 I'll put it in a CD and start earning more interest than the 4.25% my mortgage is charging me (4.5%-4.7% in March of 2006). When my arm is up, I'll cash the CDs and pay down the principal a little more than if I did it the other way (a lot more if interest rates keep going up). If rates go down I'll go back to the old way (and my money in the CD will be lock in at the higher rate still).

    March 3, 2006

Get a new carbon monoxide detector.

The old one is pretty old and doesn't look like it could detect much.

Purchased and installed. And I plugged the old one in upstairs just in case it still works, I'll have extra protection...

Still trying to figure out if CO is more likely to rise or sink.

    February 17, 2006

Do my taxes for the year before last.

    And actually mail them.

Done and mailed! (Only two years late!)
Got my refund already (March 13).

    January 15, 2006

    Get a new desk chair.

I think my current one is from 1986(?)

MeshdeskchairGot a new one! I liked it, I bought another one for the other desk.

    December 8, 2005

    See Anna Nalick in concert.

Anna and GaryI saw her on December 8, 2005. She was excellent! I got my picture taken with her too!

The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
